BLOG & PLAYBOOK - Chino Hills Huskies: The Scheme Behind the Ball Brothers

In this embedded video and diagram we look at the half court offense of the 35-0, state championship Chino Hills team of 2015-16. If you're looking for tricky sets, this isn't it. Chino Hills kept it very simple, but got a lot of mileage out of these three simple concepts.

  • The high ball screen was a primary attack in the half court. Lonzo and Big O had great chemistry. The off the ball spacing was often random, but LaMelo was always camped out the three-point line, and Eli was usually roaming the baseline for a finish or offensive rebound. LiAngelo was either spaced to the three-point line or inside the arc looking to offensive rebound.

  • Rarely did Lonzo need much help creating. He would commonly blow past his defender to score or create for others. LaMelo and LiAngelo were always ready to shoot, and Big O and Eli were great finishers and offensive rebounders.

  • In Chino Hills' transition, LiAngelo was usually on the left side. If they couldn't set up the full court pass, LiAngelo usually started a post up anywhere between the block and the three-point line. Once he got the ball, he went to work, with back downs, footwork, fade-aways. If he got it in the mid-post, he was most likely going to shoot it, and Big O and Eli were on the back side ready to clean up a miss.
