About This Play/Drill

With the endless talk of Football on ESPN these days its hard to escape the pigskin, but I think there are a lot of things we can learn from Football Coaches. The use of misdirection is key in the game of football and under-utilized in the game of basketball. The first set is what our team calls "Uno" because it is a play for our 1 man. You will notice that it is a common action and either you or someone in your league probably runs this play. The second play is just a counter to the action, a misdirection play based on how the defense is playing you.

  • 1 enters to the wing and comes off a UCLA screen from 5.

  • After the 5 man sets the UCLA screen he turns to ballscreen. 3 and 4 set a stagger for the 1. Looking for 1 on the stagger, but can hit 5 rolling to the basket.

  • 1 enters to the wing and comes off a UCLA screen from 5.

  • Instead of going to set the stagger, 4 pops for a catch at the top of the key. 3 had walked in to keep the same action and now pops out for the catch. If you have a 1 man who can post up you can end the play here with a touch in the paint.

  • The 1 man turns and sets a cross screen for the 5, who looks for a layup. The 2 and 4 then set a stagger for the 1.
